New Comic Book Day [Open to All]

These days, Audrey can't buy comic books willy-nilly. Her camper's already a crazy mess as it is and a small space that doesn't really brook mile-high stacks of books, but Audrey still enjoys going into comic shops and going through the stacks to see if there's anything particularly interesting. Already, she knows she'll grab a couple blind-boxes because she loves her some super-heroes, maybe a t-shirt, but all in good time.

For now, she's just browsing through the trade paperbacks. Those are a little easier to justify since it's more condensed, plus she gets a little more bang for her buck.

"Hey, do you know if they have the new Captain Marvel trade yet?" she asks, vaguely in the direction of the cashier but open for any to answer.

"It's on the top shelf, here let me get it for you." Lincoln murmured, shifting the stack of singles (Rat Queen, Saga, Sex Criminals) in his arms to stretch up and reach for the Captain Marvel trade. Glancing down at the top of the woman's head, he smiled as he held it out for her. "If you like the plot for that you should try the God Bomb stuff on Thor, it actually surprised me by being pretty good for once."

Lincoln turned his head before realising who it was he was talking to. His grumpy DJ from the other night at work. "Hey, again."

Bach's never been to this place before. Reading isn't his thing, his stories and pictures are all inside of the music he creates.
But Mrs. Gordon introduced Isaac to something Bach was pretty sure was something about mister America and now it was all his son wanted.
Not that he gave in to everything that was asked for, of course. But it had been a week without nightmares and another 'daddy' from Isaacs lips and shit, wasn't Bach allowed to spoil the kid?

"America", he mutters while looking around. " Something with a flag on the cover?"

Louise might be the first African-American woman to take a kaiju apart. But really, she's equal parts angry and embarrassed, because she paid a lot of money for the statue and this morning she woke because of the head breaking off. Loudly.

There's no-one behind the counter for the moment, so she just puts her headless kaiju down and grazes a little.

What was the joke? Short people are angrier because they're closer to Satan? Something like that. Audrey's feeling that on a spiritual level at the moment, but she nods because it's better than actually asking for a stool. "Don't worry," she says dryly, "the paperwork's in order. I'm allowed to be here."

"Are we talking as in Captain or Miss? Because those are two whole different characters and very different books," Audrey says. "Are you shopping for you or someone else? And um..."

She points to the Captain Marvel trade at the highest shelf that she can't reach without climbing, jumping, or laddering. "Could you get that for me?"

"Hate to tangle with the Jaeger that did that," Audrey says, nodding at the beheaded kaiju. It's why she sticks to blind boxes. Cheaper and usually more solid. She used to collect Square Enix playarts back in high school but gave up after breaking too many swords with the easiest touch. Bastards.

"It'ssss.... Third shelf up, east wall, four or five books over from the end," Levi said, not even looking up from the copy of Princess Leia #1 that he was thumbing through. Levi loved comic books. Ever since he was a kid and had to hide them in his room for fear that his father would throw them out if he found them, he loved them. Growing up as an unpopular kid with a strange ability he didn't understand the X-Men and Spider-Man had been life savers.

Ever since he had moved back to Siren Cove Levi made the trek to the comic store at least once a week to pick up the latest releases. He could have just had them shipped right to his place but he had missed out on the culture of the comic book shop as a kid and didn't want to as an adult. So when someone needed help finding something? He was more than happy to help.

"Third shelf, third sh...Damn it." She looks over at her helper and bites her lip for a second. It's not like she has an arrest record or anything, but she's never been good with authority figures. On the other hand, she can't reach the third shelf and how bad can this guy be? He's reading Star Wars comics?

"Could you um..." Audrey reaches up, showing that she can't quite reach the book in question.

Levi heard her think it before she said it but long years of practice made him wait until she actually asked the question. It was also nice of her to mentally clarify that she was not someone he needed to try and figure out if he should arrest. Closing the comic he turned and gave her a smile.

"Sure, no problem," he said, reaching it for her and handing it to her. "Have you read any of it yet? I'm always the worst at trying to decide if I should wait for the trade when I can read it all at once or subject myself to the torture of having it early, but in increments."

"I try and stick with trades," Audrey admits. "Or else digital. I live in a trailer that's already a disaster. If I get too many comics, I'm this close to an episode of Hoarders."

She takes the book, "Thanks, you know, for being taller than me."

"I don't think Hoarders does episodes on trailers. No room for the cameras, so I think you're save," Levi said, trying not to shudder at the idea of what her trailer might look like. His own place was almost ridiculously neat, an unfortunate side effect of his living situation growing up.

"And nice. I was also very nice, don't forget that," he added with a smile.

Not as bad as she makes it sound, but definitely untidy. Cleaning falls behind on her priorities, especially between gigs, so there's always an excess of clutter but she tries to keep things from sprouting or gaining sentience. Usually.

"Yes, very nice and tall, just like Groot," Audrey agrees, patting his shoulder and affecting a sweet face.

"Does that make you Rocket then?" he asked, arching an eyebrow. For some reason it didn't take much stretch of the imagination to picture her wielding a gun and shouting foul mouthed insults at her enemies. Some people just had that sort of charismatic aura about them. "Because if so, I give amazing shoulder rides."

"I've been told that being this short puts me closer to Satan, so I can believe it," she says, grinning. The comparison's probably a good one. Hell, she spends most of her time barely a few inches away from living in the dumpster anyway.

Maybe she's just got a dirty mind but...fuck it she totally has a dirty mind. "Is that an offer?"

"Are we talking as in Captain or Miss?"

He turns around to the question and smiles right away. " Oh, we're not talking roles? Because these days I have to worry about what I stand for and what my kid needs to learn. I think there's someone with a huge hand involved? Damn, that sounds dir-"

Bach sees what she's pointing at. "Of course. No-one else here to help you out?"

"Somehow I like the idea of having a resident Jaeger better than my monster being of a bad quality."
She half-shrugged. "Maybe I do things at night I can't remember."

"I'm too short and ornery," she says, shrugging. It's something she's learned to live with and gives her reason to pester strangers.

"Okay so the one I'm getting is Captain Marvel. The girl who can shape-shift and make her hands bigger or smaller is Miss Marvel, who's awesome. Then there's Captain America, who's usually Steve Rogers, and Miss America Chavez, who's one of the Young Avengers."

"I swear, you pay a hundred dollars for these things and then they turn out to be made of spun sugar," Audrey says. "But they have model kits here and usually extra glue...If you grab that book up there for me, I'll get the glue for you."

" People don't help short people these days?" Nothing wrong with her though, even though she mentions them like flaws.

"There's so many of them? Why? And are you sure the hand thing is with the girl? Because I don't know if I-" Bach gives her another look. He's probably going to need a very good excuse to not make her climb him like a wild cat. "I don't want to disappoint him and I can kinda spend this money only once."

"If only it had been hundred dollars", she muttered under her breath. "Would you do that? Do you think it's a clean enough break to fix it like that?"

"No I asked already. They're not getting it for a week or so apparently." Lee said because someone needed to share her grief. "Did you see the last one? Amazing."

Audrey shrugs. She has mean friends. She is the mean friend. It all balances, eventually.

"Yeah, tons and tons," Audrey says, scanning the shelf. "Who are you buying for?"

Audrey hisses through her teeth sympathetically.

"I mean, I'm not an expert, but can't hurt to see what your options are, right?"

Audrey nods. "I read it on ComicsVine, but I like reading on paper when I can. Depends on if I'm in a town with a good comic shop." Besides, she'd heard somewhere that buying the paper books gets more royalties for the writers.

"Son." He reaches up, getting himself a better viewpoint. "His sitter got him some and made the mistake of telling him that it's a series. But the kid's only four, you can't get a proper title out of him. So now I'm here trying to find which America he needs."
